  • An Integrated Approach Towards Electric Drive Transportation in Canada: The Role of Space R&D

    Abstract
    An Interdepartmental Working Group was formed within the Canadian Government’s energy R&D network with the objective to integrate efforts towards acceleration of innovation in the field of electric drive transportation. The Working Group, composed of six key Departments, including the Canadian Space Agency, has launched a series of initiatives to better coordinate national efforts and contributions. It also provides a focal point for dealing with the electric mobility industry, as represented by Electric Mobility Canada, on matters of interest to the Departments.   A collective historical perspective on the evolution of electric mobility in Canada is introduced to understand the rationale for integration of efforts and the overall direction for the future.
    
    Work toward the production of a national directory on electric mobility and a roadmap is under-way.  A summary of activities in the six key departments is presented.  The process to build mo-mentum within Government is addressed.  The core strength of this process lies within the inter-dependencies and influence each Department has on final outcomes.    The possibilities of inter-departmental influence have been studied.  The illustration of resulting paths is inspired from Harry Beck's original design of the British award-winning London Tube Map, a Map that is interna-tionally recognized and a symbol of effective electric mobility.
    
    The automotive industry is confronted with several challenges.  It must use effective tools to plan future to thrive in the global market.  Technology roadmapping is a way to identify product or service needs, map them onto technology alternatives, and develop plans to ensure the required technologies will be available when needed and a first key step toward innovation and competi-tiveness.  As well, Defence R&D sector advances are introduced with the mindset of synergies with other departmental needs.  Lunar exploration studies and their influence on electric-drive R&D in Canada are discussed. 
    
    Finally, long-term perspectives are outlined.  A possible common goal, under evaluation at the Canadian Space Agency, could be the development of a new R&D space-base for the technology transfer and commercialization of new niche electric transport in Canada with potential export sales worldwide.
