    Abstract
Key words: habitability, outer space, visual design, visual input, eco-mimetic.

How we can increase the habitability in extreme and confined environment? The solution is to make the most of a multidisciplinary approach and a multicultural group of project.

Extreme-Design.eu is a new research project aimed is to involve international expertise from different disciplines and cultural background to find human centred solutions and sustain cultural expression in extreme environments, particularly in Outer Space.
In outer Space the Habitation Design interacts with the most complex problematical aspects among the extreme environment engineering. However in such context H. D. takes in account all the kind of psycho-physiological pressure deriving by confinement and ?gravity. Moreover Outer Space Habitation Design is also related to specific areas such as: environmental experiencing and Man-habitat interaction, so such kind of design discipline needs high technology, fair-minded solutions and creative approach.

Our team is composed by experts that operate in advanced contemporary or completely new fields, however the first step achieved and here presented is the definition of the themes until now exploited.

ETREME DESIGN: a branch of Design that intends to increase the life quality in extreme framework at the limits of the human survival, finding project solution and supporting cultural expression. (I. Schlacht, M. Ferrino, G. Musso, E. Gaia)

SPACE ERGONOMICS: the appliance of "human factors" concerning human-machine interface scientific knowledge to the design of products, systems and environments meant for human usability in Outer Space. (M. Masali, M. Ferrino)

SPACE ANTHROPOLOGY: study of exaptations (Latin: ex and aptus): potentialities or archetypes of the function now needed within the new environment, pre-existing in the human species, that allow the physical and cultural adaptability to the outer space as an aspect of the ongoing human evolution and cultural development). (M. Masali, I. Schlacht)

SPACE DESIGN: Discipline that is aimed to contribute to the process of improving living and working conditions in Outer Space, considering -at the design stage- all the human factors that are essential in creating a personnel-friendly environment that must be comfortable, pleasant and efficient. (I. Schlacht, H. Birke, S. Brambillasca)

SPACE ART: “Contemporary art which relies on space activity for its implementation” (Malina, R., 2002), in the space habitat it is able to interact with the feeling and the mood of the habitants, opening their mind and increasing the well-being. (A. Ono)

SPACE VISUAL DESIGN: Project of visual input and visual information in the outer space habitat, meant to increase the well being in the user’s experience making use of innate reactions and intuitive communication. It is related also to human factors and cultural expressions. (I. Schlacht, M. Rötting)

SPACE PSYCHOLOGY: as a specific topic of the area of Applied Psychology, addresses the impact of the living and working conditions in space and during space flight on human behaviour, performance, mood, and behavioural health. It includes basic issues of human adaptation to the extreme conditions in space as well as operational issues of selection, training, and support of astronauts."(Manzey, 6.2007, courtesy personal communication). (S.C. Bates)

The opportunity of each element of the group, to have access at the consultation and collaboration of expert from different fields, guarantees the possibility to find project solutions characterized by a multidisciplinary approach, able to guarantee in the extreme and confined framework not only the user reliability and well being, but also cultural wisdom!
