    Abstract
Nowadays we have to face paradox of two facts in application of spatial information resources: abundant data or information and lack of such resources to users’ requirements in different departments. This situation is the results of over-vertical development of the project till today and thus sets up segmentations. To coordinate these distributed resources and play their important roles effectively, we have studied promising paradigms of distributed system and application as well as key technologies, which has showed definite results.
Using web services, grid computing and p2p technologies, we build a spatial information resource application system architecture which is distributed, loose coupled, self-organized, robust and scalable. Apart from these characters, ontology technology is also used to get resources more effectively.
This architecture was described as four-layered architecture. The lowest is Resource Layer, which can be set up by different departments in any stage. With these modular resources, applications can be updated according to resources they can get. Over this resource layer is Grid Middleware Layer which supports above layers with information searching, resource scheduling, mission assigning and so on, and supports lower layer with service registration, data storage and parallel distribution and so on. It also provides other assistant functions for grid system such as secure access mechanism. Although resources registered as services are managed by grid middleware layer in fact, they also belong to their management centers which form Center Organization Layer and are organized as p2p network. P2p network on grid middleware layer is used to improve performance of system on self-organization, scalability and so on. We also adopt some strategies to enhance its fault-tolerance capability. For example, we always keep copy of one kind of resource registration in case of its super center breaking down. To facilitate resources searching of application system, we insert a domain ontology model in this architecture. Above this layer is Application Layer where users oriented application systems will be built with lowest resources. They can choose to utilize dispersed resources in some virtual organizations as well as their own resources. Based on fundamental functions, extensible middleware layer and center organization layer enable application systems to be built step by step and in parallel from a prototype system to a final founded system. With concept of virtual organization (VO) in both P2P and Grid paradigms, this architecture is self-analog, that is, any resource could also be provided by a sub-VO. Based on theory of the architecture, we also give a concrete realization.
