    Abstract
The European Space Agency has identified the importance of the development and promotion of ‘system of systems’ in the near future. As expressed in the Agenda 2011 “New services will be enabled by exploiting several systems, space and non-space acting in concert as a ‘system of systems’.” Examples of the Agency programmes that can be viewed as a ‘system of systems’ include GMES, Aurora and the Integrated Applications Programme.

The paper introduces the concept of a system of systems and provides an example in the context of ESA's Aurora space exploration programme. In deriving the example, the creation of the programme enterprise model has been essential. The paper will discuss the construction of the enterprise model, the lessons derived from the process and the exploitation of the model within the ESA environment are then discussed through the support applications that can be derived.

In the final section of the paper, the benefits to space exploration through the exploitation of the model are presented. These are derived from the analysis of the key stakeholders within the ESA design process and the resulting capability based design approach that becomes possible. This analysis forms the results of the ESA study, system of systems analysis and design environment.
