    Abstract
    The development of complex engineering systems involves many different cross functional teams, different competences and capabilities. In order to stay competitive, aerospace manufacturers are taking aggressive approaches to cut down costs and expand its capabilities while maintaining agility. 
    
    In an industry that has shrunk to just a few prime contractors, very often companies are both rivals and partners. Divisions in companies or independent enterprises frequently team together to bid on different programs. They also cooperate on joint ventures to develop new technological solutions.
    
    In recent years, space manufacturers and service companies have been aggressively changing, evolving or in some cases revolutionizing their business models and innovation management strategies in response to the growing competition in a global market environment.
    
    The goal of this research is to develop an improved understanding of innovation management strategies and practices being pursued by top 50 space industry companies. We aim to identify their long-term strategic implications for strategic innovation management in the future. 
    
    The research offers a review and synthesis of emerging trends in innovation management strategies, principles and practices, with particular emphasis on new knowledge creation, strategic alliance formation and capability portfolio engineering. This research examines the development and management of dynamic and open organizational capabilities. These capabilities include, among other things, how enterprises generate and integrate knowledge, manage technological interdependencies, create interorganizational alliance networks, and solve complex technical problems as they design and build complex engineering systems.
    
    To grow and enhance their competitiveness, large aerospace companies must recognize the pattern of globalization and learn to globalize their own innovations and design new business models and strategies. Therefore forms of collaboration among diverse organizations, large and small, could also emerge across many borders as a plausible alternative to a new and complex wave of international interactions in the aerospace industry.
