As we celebrate 50 years in space and enjoy the proceeds from a long list of major achievements within the space sector, many of us working in a public policy environment are increasingly faced with the challenge of providing the 'evidence' of benefits from our investments in space, past and future. The data and rigorous analysis demanded for 'evidence-based decision-making', has evolved to an extent where the policy and program team is progressively more obliged to develop Space Policy and Program objectives in terms of outcomes correlated to the overall socio-economic benefits to citizens.

This paper will discuss the 'modern' types of economic indicators required to yield reliable results regarding the direct and indirect impacts from our investments. As well, the author will discuss the need to develop more robust and composite indicators for measuring the equally if not more important social impacts of public investments in the space sector. As a working member of the OECD led Global Forum on Space Economics, the author is able to discuss advances in the area of socio-economic measurement within the CSA and to share observations as to the progress being made within selected space agencies.
