The current status and challenges of the space activities and regional cooperation in the Asia-Pacific Region

- Abstract
The history of human’s space activity was started about 50 years ago. In the beginning, the US and Russia were the main actors. After those countries, European countries initiated their own space activities. Here in the Asia-Pacific region, China, India and Japan have established own space agencies in their countries and their own policies and plans. They are actively tackling with space activities in various areas for the benefit of their national interests and all human kind. Moreover, in our region, other countries such as Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam have started their own activities. In addition to these national activities, many multilateral regional cooperation activities exist such as the Asia-Pacific Satellite Communications Council (APSCC), Asia Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO), Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum(APRSAF), Center For Space Science and Technology Education in Asia And the Pacific(CSSTEAP) and Regional Space Applications Programme for Sustainable Development(RESAP). In this regards, Japan contributes to this region mainly thorough the framework of APRSAF. Like this, space activities in the Asia Pacific Region are very vigorous with many actors and initiatives. In the near future, many countries in our region will become those of key players in global cooperation in the field of exploration and Earth observation. At this session, overview of the current status and challenges of the space activities and regional cooperation in our region with emphasis on Japan’s status and contribution to this region will be reported.
