    Abstract
Within less than a year of taking office in January 2009, the next U.S. president will have to make choices that could determine the future path of U.S. civilian space activities for decades to come. What is at stake is whether the new president ratifies the essential features on the current “Moon, Mars, and beyond” exploration policy or selects some other overriding goal for U.S. space efforts in the second decade of the 21st century. This paper will describe in some detail those choices and discuss what is known about the views on space of the two presidential candidates one month before the U.S. election. The consequences for the future of various options likely to be before the next president will also be discussed.
