- Abstract
The idea of establishing a regional institution for space activities within Asia is not new and has been on the table for over a decade. In fact, several regional programs and cooperative bodies have existed and are currently active. Yet those initiatives have been limited both in scope of activities and number of countries in participation, for technical and political reasons. With emerging space powers and increased number of countries participating in space activities in Asia, along with increased role and awareness in importance of space-based applications and services, space activity in Asia is now entering a new era – it is time to refresh perspectives and revisit the modes of regional space cooperation in Asia. In doing so, some critical questions need to be answered: what are the benefits of regional cooperation? what are the limitations and obstacles of existing initiatives? what are the challenges and opportunities faced with current situation? what are some alternative cooperative mechanisms and conditions for their implementation? This paper will examine answers to these questions and provide rationale for the establishment of a regional space agency in Asia, from an economic point of view.
