- Abstract
The JAXA Industrial Collaboration program, which stated from 2003, involves promoting spin-off activities by availing space technology to industry, exploring spin-in possibilities with industry, supporting venture companies through the “open-lab” system, a technology transfer program to support SMEs develop a small satellite (SOHLA-1), and opening launch opportunities for small satellites by the H-IIA launcher. Now there are a number of companies starting new business using space technology, in various fields from ISS to remote sensing. However, the difficulty lies in how to achieve the goal of “lowering the thresholds to space” and to develop a robust space industry, while supporting SMEs and large space companies at the same time to build a working business model. On the other hand, there seems to be a significant potential in establishing a “space-brand”, demonstrated so far by companies in the field of housing, food, entertainment, and fashion & design. In this regard, a recent collaboration with heritage industry in Kyoto (kimono design, flower etc.) has been producing interesting results. The paper will introduce the outcomes and experiences of the space industrial collaboration activities in Japan, in order to share views with both space agencies and industry around the world.
