- Abstract
The Korean Astronaut Program had an objective to cultivate the 1st Korean astronaut who performed space activities such as space flight and space experiment in ISS using the Russian Soyuz spacecraft. We tried to develop the cultivation technology related to astronaut selection, training, space flight, management and manned space technology related space experiments. For selecting final 2 candidates, we organized Korean astronaut’s selection framework and started the selection process with more than 36000 candidates who want to be the very 1st Korean astronaut, in April, 2006. Through the selection process, we screened out candidates through several steps and various tests. In the end of 2006, finally we selected 2 final candidates for the 1st Korean astronauts. These 2 final candidates had training not only in Russia, GCTC, but also in Korea for our own space mission. In the same time, we developed space science mission including various space experiments. As a space science mission, we developed space experiments that include 18 space experiments selection, conceptual design and development of the experiment kits, qualification test, carrying out space experiments and results analysis. During space flight in April, 2008, we broadcasted boarding to Soyuz, space activities in ISS and returning to ground in real-time. Through these activities, we also have the Korean people promoted about the science and space.
