- Abstract
The paper summarises (past and present) approaches of ESA and NASA to establish commercial utilisation of the ISS in the area of life- and physical sciences. It identifies achievements reached so far, success factors and lessons-learnt and concludes on recommendations to facilitate a commercial utilisation of the ISS in these domains. The topic is relevant as a more significant commercial utilisation of the ISS would underline that the ISS is not only an important research laboratory for (public funded) scientists but also for the private sector. The author was in 2007 and 2008 responsible for ESA’s commercial ISS utilisation and has now, as ESA’s representative in the USA, the opportunity to look into NASA’s approach in that domain.
