    Abstract
The ignition and flow field development process of solid propellant irradiated by transient high power heat flow is very important for studying the laser ablation propulsion mechanization and the ignition process of the solid rocket motor . In this paper , high energy pulse laser was used as transient heat flow source , by using high speed schlieren photography method , the flow development process of the four typical solid propellants irradiated by transient heat flow was investigated . The results show that besides the flow of decomposition product , there still exists a high speed guide shock wave, which transient speed exceeds 1000m/s, the average steady speed is about 410m/s,and the speed does little vary with the propellant ingredient change. On the other hand, radial flow of the propellant decomposition product was observed for the first time, but it lasted for only about 20 microseconds, then its direction turned to the axial. The mechanization of the radial flow's coming into being and direction’s change should be discussed further.
