- Abstract
In 2009 the ESA’s SUCCESS student contest (Space station Utilisation Contest Calling for European Student initiatives) is marking its 10th anniversary. The SUCCESS students contest is a competition for University students from ESA member states from all disciplines. The objective of the Contest is to propose experiment that could fly on the International Space Station. This student contest is organised by ESA’s Human Spaceflight Directorate. The first prize is a paid one-year internship at the ESA European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in the Netherlands to prepare his/her experiment to fly onboard the International Space Station. In the last decade around a dozen SUCCESS experiments were flown onboard the International Space Station. For example: GraPhoBox during the Delta mission in 2004, followed by Bone Photeomics during the Eneide mission in 2005, UTBI and CASPER during the Astrolab mission in 2006. The contest itself has attracted more then one thousand students in this decade. The paper will summarise 10 years of ESA’s SUCCESS “hands-on” experience of preparation, development and operation of student scientific experiments onboard the ISS. The paper will give a short overview of preparation of a student experiment from documentation to actual hardware, passing Design and Safety Reviews including Acceptance tests followed by operation in orbit and ground data processing.
