- Abstract
The NASA Human Health and Performance Center (NHHPC) will provide an international collaborative forum to address high priority risk reduction strategies for human space flight including suborbital, orbital, and planetary flight environments. Risk reduction strategies may include research and technology development, improved medical and environmental health monitoring, and state of the art design approaches for human factors and habitability. All relevant disciplines to human health and performance can be integrated through this NHHPC to provide comprehensive expertise in human space flight for all members. Members will include NASA Centers, international space agencies, other government agencies, academic institutions, industry, and other interested organizations who will collect, evaluate and disseminate the current human health and performance evidence base, conduct workshops, and pursue collaborative projects. Goals Goals for the NHHPC include (and may be modified by members): • Collect, integrate, and disseminate knowledge and best practices • Facilitate collaborative projects and leverage resources through relationships between participants to: o Maximize the use of scarce resources o Pursue projects that no one organization has sufficient resources to pursue alone • Drive innovation including the use of new models of open innovation • Develop educational products at all levels • Drive human system research and technology development, including fundamental biology • Provide effective virtual (e.g., web based) and in-person forums (e.g., topical workshops) for information exchange and to address high priority needs Themes The NHHPC will organize around themes to be developed by NHHPC members and may include but not be limited to health, performance, environment, commercial space, and education. Administration of the NHHPC A Director and Deputy Director will administer the NHHPC. The Director, NHHPC will be supported by a senior strategist and other administrative staff. Representatives from member organizations, together with the NHHPC Director, will comprise an Executive Council to guide the development and prioritization of goals, objectives, and projects for the Center. The Director will serve as Chair of the Executive Council, and council membership will include both permanent and rotating members as established by the Chair and member organizations. Meetings will be conducted in person and by alternate electronic means on a monthly basis, or on an as needed basis as determined by the Chair. The NHHPC will conduct business through web-based services as well as in face-to-face meetings. An interactive participant website will be implemented to support the NHHPC.
