    Abstract
    The paper presents a brief exposition of the salient features of the Indian Space Programme with an update on its achievements and policies.   Starting with the history of the inception of the Indian Space Programme, a brief mention will be made on the nature of organisation of ISRO in the governmental framework. It is also aimed to discuss the major objectives, major programmes, and way of public and societal outreach. A section of the paper will deal with the evolution of the indigenous launch vehicle programmes, and various application programmes vis-à-vis  the remote sensing and earth observation initiatives ; The commercial ventures of the ISRO /Department of Space as well as programmes on international co-operation, academia endeavours and technology transfer through industry participation are some of the highlights that are being planned in the paper.
