- Abstract
The 2011 Move An Asteroid (MAA) technical paper competition asked entrants to come up with original and innovative methods and concepts for mitigating the impact threat to Earth from Near Earth Object (NEO)s. Entrants were tasked to address one or more of the key areas in planetary defence including; initial detection and tracking, deflection missions and a global warning system. Teams of up to three were given the opportunity to have their ideas heard by authoring a technical paper which were all then judged by a panel of aerospace and planetary defence experts. The papers were judged based on the quality of the concept description, technical detail, and originality. This competition was open to all students and young professionals worldwide, under the age of 33, with the aim of encouraging the entrants to become the next generation of planetary defence and NEO experts. The competition has been run by the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) NEO Working Group; a team dedicated to representing the opinions and ideas of students and young professionals to the United Nations programme on space applications and the worldwide NEO community. This is a continuation of the 3 previous Move an Asteroid competitions which successfully ran in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
