- Abstract
ABSTRACT: Wetland is a natural resource which supports livelihood activities of peasant farmers. However, rapid population growth and anthropogenic activities have resulted in increasing encroachment and destruction of wetlands. The use of analogue instrument is deficient in effective analysis and monitoring of the resulting danger, hence the need for Geospatial analysis. While the study is aimed at analyzing changing pattern of wetlands in the study area, the objectives are: to examine the spatio-temporal pattern of wetland areas (1986 - 2007); examine anthropogenic activities on the wetlands using Geospatial technique; and assess the socio-economic and environmental implications of depletion of the wetlands. The data collected was analyzed using, SPSS, ILWIS (3.4), and Arc GIS (9.2). The study produced thematic maps of the wetlands areas over space and time and revealed the human activities responsible for the reduction in wetland areas. The study also provided effective framework for the management of wetlands areas.
