- Abstract
A tribute to the hard work and dedication of thousands of people, and to the remarkable on-orbit intervention capabilities of the Space Shuttle, The Hubble Space Telescope has been a remarkably productive "Discovery Machine" in the last 20 years. Five servicing missions, from 1993 to 2009, have not only kept the orbiting observatory in good working condition, but have kept is as an instrument with state-of-the-art instrumentation. This author has participated as an astronaut in two out of the five servicing missions, including the very critical first one. This lecture will address the challenge of servicing a complex scientific instrument in the space environment, and the work accomplished on these five encounters. The presentation will also comment on how, along with new scientifical results, the Hubble Space Telescope will have uniquely contributed to education and outreach about space matters.
