    Abstract
Communicating the wonders of Space Science to young learners in an interesting, fun and cost-effective method has always been a challenge. As a volunteer, informal Space Education and Public Outreach Coordinator, I took this challenge in 2007 and using my experience as an educator of Speech \& Drama, created a set of lesson plans to introduce young students to Space Science using Speech \& Drama and Applied Drama techniques.

In keeping with the IAC theme of ‘African Astronaissance: Space serving development in Africa’, these lessons can be used to educate and inspire African children and young adults about space, space technology, and spinoffs in an inexpensive and enjoyable way. It can be conducted in a formal or informal setting – a classroom, community centre, planetarium, courtyard, garden or field.

Speech \& Drama includes the main elements of poetry, prose, acting, storytelling, mime and improvisation. Applied Drama is used to indicate work with drama that does not have public performance as its prime objective, but rather, uses drama as a means to some other educational or therapeutically positive outcome. The lessons aim to teach children about the Solar System and how planets orbit, gravity and its benefits, SETI, among many other topics using creative, handmade props and elements mentioned above.

Lessons begin with fun warm-up exercises, starting with relaxation exercises to help create focus and control over mind and body. This is followed by enjoyable breathing and vocal exercises for good breath control, voice production and clear, sustained speech. Fun physical exercises usually create a lot of giggles and laughter. The main theme / concept of the lesson is introduced by way of a piece of space news, poetry, prose or acting. After discussing the piece and making sure the children understand, the creative process begins to transform it into a story, mime, improvisation etc. Discussions with students / young adults can even include thought-provoking questions such as ‘How can space and space technology help mankind?’. Space related topics and news items can also be used to create poetry and artwork to further stimulate imagination and understanding.

A lesson from the series was demonstrated for my teacher’s diploma practical exam and well received. Some adjustments were made to make them more interesting and engaging. They provided students with confidence in communicating and performing effectively, and inspired imagination, while gaining an invaluable insight and appreciation of space and its benefits.
