    Abstract
    SA AMSAT was founded in Cape Town in 1979 with two main onjectives
    
    . To develop an interest in satellite communication and Space activity in general
    
    . To support development in radio technology for space applications
    
    The paper will trace the history of the organisation and highlight some of the developments the association was instrumental in, such as the introduction of the AX25 packet radio protocol still widely used in amateur and educational cubesat satellites today, antenna and preamp development and the tracking of satellites.
