- Abstract
NEREUS is a network set up by European regions involved in the development and use of Space technologies in Europe. Regional authorities make a substantial contribution to Space policy, by creating services for the general public through new market initiatives and by their ability to ensure active participation by the various socio-economic stakeholders in their regions. By working together in a non-profit international association, the European regions and their corresponding affiliated organisations can pursue the following goals: o bringing regional influence to bear on the planning and development of European Space programmes and activities related to infrastructures and applications; o implementing and promoting partnerships and cooperation schemes between the European Regions, with a view to developing shared or complementary strengths and assets; o ensuring that the needs of end-users are correctly taken into account in the Space services provided by European Union programmes; o ensuring the availability of Space services across all regions, for the balanced development of the European Union and the full expression of its Space sector potential; o helping to improve promotion of Europe’s Space activities in a context of increasing global competition; o giving Europe’s citizens a greater role in the shaping of European policy and the development of Space-service markets. For this purpose NEREUS has put in place working groups on the following themes: Regional Policies; Earth Observation (GMES); Navigation (GNSS); Space-based Telecommunications Space Exploration; Education, Training and Communication. After a description of NEREUS the aim of this paper is to present the status, activities and outputs of the various working groups.
