- Abstract
The Move an Asteroid Competition is an annual competition organized by the NEO Working Group of the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC). The competition encourages international students and young professionals to perform research and write technical papers describing unique and innovative concepts for mitigating impact threats from Near Earth Objects (NEOs). The mitigation remedy could involve a number of areas including but not limited to: initial detection & tracking, deflection, impact mitigation, and active global warning systems. The competition's main goal is to raise the young generation’s interest in NEO research and highlight the importance of planetary defence. The entries are judged by a panel of experts in the area of planetary defence based on the metrics of concept description, technical detail, and originality. The competition has been ongoing for several years and has generated worldwide interest. This paper presents the technical mitigation approach from the winner of the 2012 Move an Asteroid competition.
