- Abstract
The Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria established the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) in 1999, and mandated it to pursue the development and application of space science and technology programs for the socio-economic benefit of Nigeria. The National Center for Remote Sensing (NCRS), Jos, was established under NASRDA, and charged with the responsibility of harmonizing research and development in space science and technology application for sustainable socio-economic development. NCRS, therefore, acquires, process, archive and distribute satellite data from NigeriaSat-1, NigeriaSat-2 and NigeriaSat-X. In order to efficiently do this, NCRS has established Space Application Laboratory in three of the six geopolitical zones of the country - Ile-Ife (South-West), Uyo (South-South), and Kano (North-West). This paper focuses on the role of NCRS in the management of remotely-sensed data in Nigeria. It gives a brief history of the establishment of NCRS. It then discusses the management system of remotely-sensed data within the NCRS system, i.e data acquisition, processing, archiving and distribution system. It further talks on the problem of the system. It gives a conclusion and recommendations.
