- Abstract
The article proposes an overview on the domain of space-based services and applications, and how these are today an integral part of many industries. It proposes a classification by domain of application (e.g. earth observation, telecommunication, navigation), by vertical market or industry segment (defense, agriculture, energy, commercial shipping, etc.). For each key segment, the market drivers and value chain are identified and analyzed. In a second step, the article looks at innovation processes in the space-based services domain. It compares development of services in existence today with current trends for innovation in the industry, and analyzes specific problems in this context.
