    Abstract
Kenya has set in motion the process of establishing an institution to coordinate its space related activities and thus effectively start a national space programme. This institution will be referred to as the National Space Secretariat and has so far met all the statutory requirements.
The history of space activities in Kenya date back to the early 60’s when an operational base, consisting of launch and ground segments, was set up at its coast. Half a century later, Kenya is still an “aspiring space nation”. We present the actions that were taken to establish the national space programme and the challenges that have hindered the development of space science and technology in Kenya. We also discuss the activities currently being undertaken to address these challenges.
