- Abstract
The contribution of space art to the United States’ space program has been significant in the development of NASA. Space art has been able to show the majesty of space science and engineering in a way words cannot describe. This paper will show examples of space art’s role in shaping the research and public perception of space initiatives throughout the United States’ history. The influence of many space art programs that have been started in the last fifty years, such as the NASA Space Art Program and International Association of Astronomical Artists, is addressed. With the examples of these organizational contributions, it will be clear that space art has worked to document United States’ history but has also worked as a tool to help develop the United States’ space program by showing technological and scientific artistry of space technology in an inspiring manner for the public and the future generations of NASA leaders.
