    Abstract
Hybrid rocket shows interesting characteristics of complicated mixing layers developed by interactions between turbulent oxidizer flow and mass flow from surface due to fuel vaporization. LES analysis was conducted to investigate the evolution of turbulent coherent vortices and the interaction and merging phenomenon of vortex by inserting a ring in the idealized hybrid rocket motor. Even though the chemical reaction was not considered, the calculation results can be useful in determining the turbulence characteristics generated by the ring. The calculation results show that the installation of ring (diaphragm) can introduce the additional turbulence and improve the fluctuate motion to the downstream flow. From the numerical results, it is seen that vortex structures near the wall becomes stronger due to the interaction with surface mass injection, and the local heat flux increases due to the vortices. This phenomenon is related to the dimple-life surface observed in the number of experimental tests. However, the addition of ring in the cylindrical duct brings the different behaviors of vortex dynamics and pressure oscillations when comparing with the base-line calculation result. This enhancement can be done by the formation of the active and strong vorticity production and merging after the ring.
