- Abstract
This paper deals with the development and educational approach for the CanSat teacher training course hosted by NAROM. The CanSat teacher training course started up as a 2 day pilot course in the fall of 2008 for teachers at upper secondary school. The teachers who attended the course went back to their school and started a local CanSat project for their class. In the spring of 2009 the teachers and their students gathered at NAROM to compete in the first Norwegian CanSat competition. NAROM has since then studied and learned more about how the CanSat program can be adopted to upper secondary school as an Educational program mainly within Science Technology and Mathematics (STEM). In the last couple of years NAROM has been hosting teacher training courses both with and without credits in cooperation with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Norway and Aalborg University (AAU) in Denmark. The CanSat kit is devloped by AAU were also a CanSat teacher guide book has been developed by NAROM together with NTNU and AAU. An analysis of the curriculum goals within the “Science and technology” has been performed in cooperation with NTNU. This makes it easier to show how the CanSat concept can be adopted into the classroom. There is currently an ongoing work trying to adopt a light version of the program to lower secondary school as well. In the fall of 2012 the teacher training course had teachers participating from Norway and Denmark both from lower and upper secondary school in cooperation with the European Space Education Office Norway (ESERO Norway) run by NAROM. The same field course were also held in cooperation with ESA for 24 European teachers from lower and upper secondary school at NAROM in the fall of 2012. For 2013 the CanSat teacher program has become a part of the ESERO Nordic program supported by the European Space Agency opening up for participants from the Nordic countries to participate. The paper will present the current status of the CanSat teacher training program, how teachers can bring the project into their classroom and future possibilities.
