THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE AEROSPACE INDUSTRY IN MEXICO AND THE IMPACT OF TRANSFER OF SPACE TECHNOLOGY ON ITS SOCIETY

- Abstract
Mexico is currently a developed country that just joined the space arena at the end of 2011, selecting its first space agency director. Thanks to the creation of the space agency, in the country, there is a big movement of industry and academia that are pushing the development of new programs, such as the creation of the Centro de Desarrollo Aeroespacial (CDA) in one of the most important universities in the country, Politecnico Nacional. One of the major goals of the Space Agency is to impulse the aerospace industry that currently exist in the country with more than 20,000 employees in 186 companies like, Goodrich Aerospace in Baja California, Safran Group in Chihuahua, Bombardier in Queretaro, and Hydra Technologies in Jalisco. Currently, Mexico has the capability to design aeronautical components, both for military and civil applications, electronics, testing and software and prototype development. The development of the Space Industry in the country, will help Mexico to increase the number of certified companies, consolidate current capabilities in order to manufacture more complex parts and components, and be able, in some years, to fully assemble aircrafes at home. This paper presents the results that the development of the space sector has been achieving in Mexico, and the expectations related to the relationship between the academia, with up to 140,000 new engineers every year, government and society. The paper explain the unique position that Mexico posses right now as an emerging space country, and examples in how the transfer of space technology between institutions can benefit the country and the consequenses that this has in the organisational, economic and financial sector. It is important that Mexico continue learning how to collaborate with companies with more advance space technology to increase its capabilities and provide mutual benefit. At the end, this paper share examples of partnership between companies in transfer of space technology, and how this examples can inspire developing countries like mine.
