- Abstract
The International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) was founded in Stockholm in 1960. The main purposes of the Academy are: to foster the development of astronautics for peaceful purposes, to recognize individuals who have distinguished themselves in the field of Astronautics, to foster international cooperation. Academy members are from all over the world, including approximately 65 countries. The Academy has been very active in the field of Human Spaceflight by organizing thematic symposia and publishing Cosmic Studies. In 2010, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its foundation, the Academy held the first Head of Space Agencies Summit, gathering 30 Heads of Space Agencies. At that time, the Academy published the report: “Future Human Spaceflight: the need for international Cooperation”, it explained the need for global cooperation in Human exploration beyond Low Earth Orbit. The Academy has organized the follow on Head of Space Agencies Summit, on the 9/10 January 2014 and dedicated to Human Spaceflight and Robotics Exploration. At this unprecedented Summit, 32 Head of Space Agencies have attended. To prepare the Summit, several projects have been initiated, by the Academy, to foster global cooperation on Human Spaceflight; these have involved about 200 space experts world wide. At the 2014 Summit, the preliminary conclusions of these projects have been presented with plan to complete them together with opportunities for the Space Agencies to join in. The IAA Proposals to Space Agencies have been welcomed by the Space Agencies present. These projects will continue to engage Space Agencies, after the Summit, in many specific activities, of strategically relevance, for the future of Space Exploration with the goal to act as catalyst for involving new and developing countries. The connection with the Robotics activities has been strengthening considering the tight connection between the two activities. The paper will present the status of these projects of the Academy in Human Spaceflight on-going after the Summit and their future plans for completion with the involvement of Space Agencies.
