    Abstract
The visible and infrared imaging spectrometers are very powerful instruments to study the solar system bodies aboard the space probes. They have the important capability to be suitable for a very wide interdisciplinary science. Nowadays we have gathered a solid experience on their scientific effectiveness based on the breakthrough results coming from the various past and present space missions. This solid background makes the VIS-IR imaging spectrometers a reference point for a core payload suite of most of the future space mission explorers in our solar system. We will make a point on their achievement and development.
