- Abstract
The Canada-Norway Rocket Science Training and Educational Program (CaNoRock STEP) is a graduate training program which builds on the success of the undergraduate Canada-Norway Student Sounding Rocket (CaNoRock) program. CaNoRock-STEP fosters international collaboration in two ways. The first is by providing funding to undergraduate and graduate students who participate in one and two term study exchanges between participating Canadian and Norwegian Universities. The second way, and the principle focus of CaNoRock STEP, is an annual space physics summer school where ten PhD students and four instructors from Norway and Canada are sequestered at a remote research station to analyze data, and research, write and submit one or more scientific journal articles in ten days. The first CaNoRock STEP PhD school was held in November of 2013 at the University of Calgary’s Barrier Lake Research Station in the mountains near Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada. The instructors selected in-situ data from the CHAMP and Ampere satellites and ground-based SuperDARN radar data and introduced the students to two open questions relating to the Earth’s Ionosphere. Ten long days later the students had prepared and submitted two papers to Geophysical Research Letters. The 2014 CaNoRock-STEP field course will be held at the Andøya Rocket Range in Norway. This school and will focus on data from European Space Agency’s SWARM satellite mission, which was launched in November of 2013. CaNoRock-STEP is supported by a 2 million NOK grant from the Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Education (SIU)—a Norwegian Government Agency promoting international cooperation in education and research.
