- Abstract
In 2012, the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) established a study group to report on the probability of the emergence of a human orbital space market world-wide. This paper will provide an introductory overview of the goals and analytical approaches implemented to conduct this study. Unlike analyses that approach similar topics from singular technical, financial or legal perspectives, this study group is pursuing a multi-disciplinary, multi-national and multi-cultural “holistic” approach. After the initial phase of identifying the specific human orbital space markets being targeted, the analysis will continue from the perspective of likely space-faring nations with a country-by-country (or region-by-region) look to identify relevant political, legal, capital, historical and cultural factors and structures, identify the set of industries that comprise, support or are related to the identified human orbital space markets, and qualitatively evaluate the likelihood that these industry clusters are sufficient for the eventual natural evolution of human orbital space markets. Although it is far too soon to present results of these different study phases, this paper will provide the background and detailed descriptions of each.
