- Abstract
Africa is geographically located at 7.1881° N, 21.0936° E and it is the world's second-largest and second-most-populous continent. At about 30.2 million km² (11.7 million sq mi) including adjacent islands, it covers six percent of the Earth's total surface area and 20.4 percent of the total land area. With 1.1 billion people as of 2013, it accounts for about 15% of the world's human population. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, both the Suez Canal and the Red Sea along the Sinai Peninsula to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Maritime related pollution is on the increase on this continent due to some socio-economic activities such as sea port operations, petroleum exploration activities and households related waste generation par day. As a result of this pollution Seafood and Aquatic lives are on the decline thereby threatening the food security of the continent and yet bringing about diseases that are affecting the well being of humans as well. How satellite Technology can aid: Modern satellite technology such as the Automatic Identification System (AIS) (an automatic tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic services (VTS) for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships, AIS base stations, and satellites) can help in this regard.
