    Abstract
This presentation will provide an overview of the Australian Government’s civil space regulation in the context of its current review of the Space Activities Act 1998.

The need to review the current legislation is stimulated by recognition that advancements in space technologies, and the associated reduction in the traditional barriers to entry into the marketplace, are creating opportunities for Australian commercial firms to more actively participate in the global space market. It is important in this changing environment that government regulation does not unnecessarily inhibit these opportunities.

The terms of reference for the review acknowledge that the space environment is complex and space regulation must consider many diverse and competing views. The challenge for the Australian Government as it progresses the review will be balancing commercial interests with national interests and international responsibilities. Australia is a party to the five United Nations treaties on space which bind Australia as a nation to certain conditions and responsibilities.

Similarly, it is important to consider the potential impacts of new technologies on the space environment and the need to protect space as a sustainable resource for the future.

The review process has involved extensive consultation with government, industry, researchers and international stakeholders. The presentation will include an overview of the findings from this consultation and the options for the future.
