- Abstract
Australia is home to a wide range of scientific and technological expertise in understanding Solar System origins and evolution, from lunar science, meteoritics and small bodies, asteroid differentiation, planetary mission science and technology, regolith processes on asteroids and the Moon, advanced analytical techniques, fireball observations and orbital dynamics, to astrobiology and links with the exoplanet and stellar evolution astrophysical communities. Since 2015, this expertise is networked under SSERVI Australia -- the Australian node of NASA Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute. The SSERVI Australia node aims to strengthen national planetary research and extend collaborations with the international community. To date, we count about 50 active researchers located across several Australian institutions, mostly universities, and together we published in the highest-profile scientific journals. Our research team has worked on the following missions: Hayabusa, Hayabusa2, InSight, MSL, OSIRIS-REx, GRAIL, BepoColombo, and Apollo missions. SSERVI also supports the citizen science outreach program, Fireballs in the Sky, that received Premier’s Science Award for West Australian Science Engagement Initiative of the Year, and the Australian Government Eureka Prize for Innovation in Citizen Science.
