- Abstract
Building ground stations in remote places calls for a high degree of planning and resourcefulness. Cultural nuances, climatic considerations, telecommunications, power supply, logistics and technological matters are seldom straightforward. This is particularly true for places hitherto without ground segment experience. The establishment of ground stations in three remote locations: Ross Island in Antarctica, the Pacific Ocean coral atolls of Tokelau and New Zealand’s temperate South Island provide case studies with wider application. Lessons learnt from this work are discussed.
