space education and capacity building for emerging countries

- Abstract
We have collaborated with space-related academies to organize the “Satellite Design Contest” for students from high schools, higher professional schools, universities and graduate schools since 1993. The contest is constituted of 3 categories, namely, 1) Design category, 2) Idea category, and 3) Junior category which is set for the high school students only. In Idea category, we received impressive proposals from teams of the Philippines and Taiwan in 2016. A grand prize is awarded to a champion in each category as a result of the final review. The “Satellite Design Contest” marked its 24th anniversary in 2016 and gave students from higher professional schools, universities and graduate schools a lot of opportunities to deeply learn about the design, technology, and operation of the artificial satellites through working on designing satellites by themselves. Furthermore we have carried out capacity building program. The space development and utilization is not a privilege one only for the developed nations. More than 50 countries have already possessed and are utilizing satellites in the world. Upon requests from Vietnam, Turkey, UAE, JSF has already worked on capacity building activities for space related people of those countries, including young engineers in the space industry. JSF and the Japanese space related companies have produced over 40 units of educational texts necessary for the capacity building under the contracts of JAXA. We expect such capacity building needs or requirements would increase more and more in near future. In my presentation I would like to introduce our educational activities and capacity building program.
