The Mexican Space Ecosystem as a Contributor to the Development of the Space Sector in Mexico

- Abstract
The Mexican Space Agency (AEM) has been working to develop a national strategy to build the national capacities and space infrastructure needed to secure the purpose defined in the Law that established the AEM. Nowadays, capacities and resources exist in Mexican institutions, which are considered as a solid foundation to the development of the Space Sector in Mexico. The AEM and the National Science and Technology Council (CONACYT) have created a sectorial fund to finance the development of R&D projects related with space science and technology. In the three years of the fund’s operation, it has sponsored around 50 projects. All these projects are aligned with the National Space Strategy defined in the National Space Activities Program (PNAE). The Mexican institutions developing these projects are part of the incipient Mexican Space Ecosystem. The construction and operation of Regional Space Development Centers (RSDCs) is considered part of this strategy. Each of these Centers is specialized in a particular Space Technology, and its specialties will be complementary. RSDCs provide specialized infrastructure and resources to support and foster the Mexican Space Ecosystem. This paper describes the role the AEM plays on the building of national space capacities, an analysis of the results of the three years of operation of the Space Sectorial Fund as a contribution to the development of the Mexican Space Ecosystem, an analysis of the results, and the role of the existing RSDCs as contributors to the Mexican Space Ecosystem. Finally, lessons learned will be presented as a contribution from the perspective of Latin America.
