- Abstract
The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), in its capacity as a capacity-builder, a facilitator and a gateway to space, is leading global efforts in the promotion of international cooperation in the peaceful exploration and use of outer space and in the utilization of space science and technology for sustainable development. The Global Space Partnership for the Sustainable Development Goals is proposed by UNOOSA to be the most comprehensive and inclusive mechanism to consolidate the efforts of the global space community in helping countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All entities, including intergovernmental entities, countries, non-governmental organizations, the industry and private sector, philanthropic foundations, the academia, are welcome to join the Partnership. Countries, especially the developing countries, and international/regional organizations with mandates in helping countries achieve SDGs are users. A very inclusive framework makes the Partnership especially compatible with existing and new initiatives. Instead of replacing them, the Partnership will actually strengthen them. A robust implementation structure is also proposed to carry out in-country projects. The Partnership is to be operational since 2021. Global user needs consolidation and space systems capacity coordination, which are crucial for future development, are expected to enhance coordination of space activities at the global and regional level. International cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space will be greatly enhanced.
