Corporate Venture Investment as a Development Tool for New Space Companies Support

- Abstract
The paper considers recent developments in the New Space infrastructure development with a special emphasis on the recent Russian activities. Since June 2017 the leading Russian state corporations are working at deployment of the corporate venture funds purposefully directed at supporting the small innovation business. In November Roscosmos State Corporation had signed a MoU with two leading players of the national innovation system, VEB Innovations foundation and Russian Venture Company to create a joint venture fund investing in small innovation businesses, with the legally binding documents due by mid-2018. The paper discusses the basic approaches toward the investees’ selection principles, balancing financial and strategical interests in portfolio building and structuring the technical and market priorities defining the fund’s thematical directions. The background information is also provided based on the space-related investment history and trends in Russian institutional environment, including earlier efforts of Skolkovo Foundation and recently announced projects of a number of the corporate players.
