- Abstract
As the societal benefits of space technologies and applications are growing, the International community has increasingly shifted its attention to their contributions to the global agendas on sustainability and development, in particular the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this context, the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS) has developed a “Space2030” agenda, furthering on the long-term vision of space as a fundamental driver of sustainable development. In this line, the dissemination of space outreach events, knowledge and know-how, will be essential to give the possibility to more states to access space and its derived benefits to contribute towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development fully. The study examines the efforts made by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Activities (UNOOSA) to achieve its mission as a facilitator for intensifying international cooperation and institutional strength through capacity-building and outreach programmes, particularly in Latin American countries. Furthermore, the paper refers to the initiatives carried out by the United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN- SPIDER) to expand access, information and know-how in the region. In this context, the paper analyses the importance of capacity building for sustainable development in Latin America, the socio- economic benefits in the region and its contribution in advancing cooperation towards a long-term sustainability guideline established during UNISPACE+50. Accordingly, the final part analyses the connection between SDG4 on Quality Education and space education, in particular space data capacity building, as an essential pathway to empower future generations with the skills and competencies needed to achieve sustainable development for the benefit of humanity. Within this line, the paper will address the importance of international cooperation in space activities as an opportunity to foster space-related benefits derived from the use of space instruments technology and applications among spacefaring and emerging space nations. The importance of bringing closer the four key pillars of space economy, space society, space accessibility and space diplomacy to all decision-making at all levels will be illustrated, acknowledging the valuable socio-economic benefits derived from the peaceful use of outer space, and its contribution to the Sustainable Development Agenda.
