- Abstract
The ongoing progression and evolution of the space sector is determined by multiple interrelated trends characterised by the swift growth of the number of actors conducting space activities, including new companies and new Countries. The progressive interest of regions across the world turning to and investing in space economy, considering both space upstream and downstream and their desire to invest, generates a close coordination between international organisations, governments, spaceports, and the commercial sector. In Europe, national space strategies seem rooted in both local economic concerns and fits into broader international strategies, showcasing encouraging trends for an evolution in the global space sector and potential success model of mutually beneficial partnerships both for private and public sector. The paper analyses an EU approach to space as global resource and the scenario where the EU would declare the acceptance of obligations and rights of the United Nations Treaties on Outer Space. The recent proposals for a New Space Economy European Legislation presented by Niklas Nienaß (Member of the European Parliament for the Greens/EFA) is also considered and analysed in view of the establishment of a coherent space legislation in Europe ensuring a safe and sustainable use of space while preserving the EU space industry’s competitiveness.
