- Abstract
In the topic of space exploration, the need for accurate navigation and mapping of unexplored environments, such as caves on other planets, presents a significant challenge. This sensor proposes a novel approach to address this challenge by integrating multiple sensor technologies. By combining Infrared Light Detection and Ranging (IR LiDAR) with stereo cameras, a fusion algorithm is developed to merge the strengths of each sensor. The resulting fusion yields highly precise, full-color point-cloud data, offering accuracy in both mapping and color representation. The proposed method holds promise for enabling safe and effective exploration of extraterrestrial caves, potentially providing detailed maps with up to two-centimeter accuracy. This research contributes to the advancement of space exploration technology, offering a pathway to navigate and map previously inaccessible terrains on other bodies.
