- Abstract
Crews 51-54 of the Mars Desert Research Station began the development of the Spaceward Bound training curriculum that will be used to train future field astronauts for Moon and Mars missions. Most of the crewmembers were chosen to perform research in a specific area of interest (geology, astronomy, biology, etc.) to contribute not only to the Spaceward Bound curriculum, but also to the Mars Society’s collection of research. However, the Chief Engineer not only assisted with building the curriculum and conducting surface-excursion research, but also was required to ensure the survival of the crewmembers and success of the mission by maintaining life support and power systems, repairing vehicles, communicating issues with Mission Control, and other duties as directed by the Commander. In-simulation construction projects were also conducted and captured on video to demonstrate the possibilities of base expansion with standard power tools as opposed to specially designed ones.
