- Abstract
Structural optimization of shields against space debris aims at minimizing the total mass of shields by selecting apropos configurations, materials and dimensions. Several tools including MDPANTO, SHIELD, and COLLO are developing their structural optimization modules and primary results have been published. Based on the development and calibration of the first edition of MODAOST, a space debris risk assessment tool, CAST (China Academy of Space Technology) carried out the development of a structural optimization tool for MODAOST, namely MODAOST 2.0 edition. This paper introduced the formulation of the structural optimization problem, and investigated the differential evolution and modified differential evolution algorithm. Then framework design of the software was presented. The tool demonstrated its validity and efficiency when compared its optimization engine with iSight, a famous commercial optimization software, on three structural optimization examples. The results published in the examples can be used as a reference for the calibration of other structural optimization tools for debris shields.
