    Abstract
When calculating the critical projectile diameter of shielding penetration by space debris, one has to determine the fragmentation-initiation velocity at which a projectile begins to fragment and the impact velocity region changes from the ballistic region to the shatter region. This paper presents a methodology to determine the fragmentation-initiation velocity. The dimensional analysis of a projectile impacting on a shield was carried out firstly to obtain an original function. Results of impact tests and numerical simulations were used to accomplish the final function of the fragmentation- initiation velocity. The developed function consists of the shield thickness, the projectile characteristic size and the material parameters (sound velocity and strength). It can be used to predict the fragmentation-initiation velocity for projectiles of different shapes and materials. Analysis and results show that the fragmentation-initiation velocity scales with the ratio of the shield density to the projectile density and the ratio of the shield thickness to the projectile characteristic size. Prediction by this paper has good agreement with the results of the developed equations (by Piekutowski and Reimerdes et al.).
