    Abstract
Since 1996, with the launch of Measat-1, Malaysia has joined the space–nations of the world. Eventhough, the large capital investment needed and the high risk associated with space activities, Malaysia view space technology as an important tool to advance from a developing country to a developed country by 2020.

The Malaysian space technology needs to be examined in the context of Malaysia aspiration as stated in Vision 2020. Nine strategic challenges were identified which needs to be overcome in order to achieve a developed nation status, among them is the establishment of a scientific and progressive society, a society that is innovative and forward-looking, one that is not only a consumer of technology but also a contributor to the scientific and technological civilisation of the future.

Malaysia owned satellites are now used for communication, information services and entertainment. Malaysia had also launched a small micro-satellite, i.e. Tiungsat, which provides the platform for future small satellite programs. However to ensure the success of such programmes, the capacity building of space technology in Malaysia must be met to ensure continuity and quality of space technology programmes.

This paper outlines the development required in order for Malaysia to be involved in Space Technology in the spirit of becoming a developed nation by 2020. In other words, this paper aimed to spell out, what are required to move Malaysia from essentially a consumer and importer of space technology to a country that innovates and has a competitive indigenous space industry with some share in the world space activities. The activities include the role of Government Agencies, Universities and the Corporate sectors.
