    Abstract
In the area of nano and pico satellites a rapid grows of student built pico satellites can be observed in the last years. The University of Würzburg contributed in the scope of the cubesat program with its own pico satellite UWE-1 and launched it successfully in October 2005. The results from the UWE-1 mission showed, that the On-Board Data Handling (OBDH) System proved to be reliable and stable, causing no problems during the operation of UWE-1. Nevertheless, with the development of UWE-2, the next satellite of the University of Würzburg, it seemed necessary to rebuilt the structure of the available software OBDH. As the satellite was mainly built from students, the working staff changed since last year and many new students are now involved and working on the satellite. As the previous data handling system was mainly built to be effective and small, it is very hard to maintain and extend this system. Therefore a new modular und extensible OBDH system was designed to facilitate the further development of the UWE satellite platform.
This work describes the new developed OBDH system and explains the advantages compared to the former used implementation. The new system also fulfils the high requirements, i.e. reliability and stability, but with an easier extension capability. Especially in the case of educational projects this is a very essential improvement, as the working staff changes very often. The features of the old OBDH were restructured in a more modular way to include them in the new OBDH architecture. Additional features were implemented and will be presented in the paper. The modular structure of the new system enables therefore also the usage for other satellite platforms, by replacing only the specific modules of the UWE-architecture.
